Huawei Mobile is one of the largest mobile companies of China. Huawei has more than 40% market share which includes its sub brand Honor followed by Vivo, Oppo and Xiaomi in April 2020. In 2014, Huawei Mobile launched its smartphone for the first time in Nepal. Since then, various smartphones have been launched by Huawei Mobile in Nepal. As every other smartphone company in Nepal, Huawei is also focused on selling their phones via offline stores rather than online stores as in the context of Nepal, the offline stores have wide spread reach and more sales than online stores. Due to this reason, the price may fluctuate from time to time.
In terms of sales volume, Huawei was the second-largest smartphone brand in Nepal but the market share of Huawei Mobile in Nepal has decreased to less than 5% now. The sudden decrease in market share is due to the Ban of Huawei by the US. The company was enlisted in the “Entity List” by the US. And since then, the new Huawei Mobile phones don’t have Android OS or any Google apps like Gmail, Chrome, Youtube, Playstore, etc. However the ban hasn’t affected its market shares in China and it’s still at No. 1 position in Chinese Smartphone Market inside China.
The US ban restricted Huawei from using any US-owned product into its smartphones such as Google’s software Android and Google’s apps. However , to tackle this problem Huawei also launched its own Harmony OS (Hóngméng) as an alternative to Android. But it’s limited to Huawei’s Smart TVs only. Hence, the new Huawei Mobile phones that launched in 2020 or are going to be launched won’t have Google apps like Gmail, Chrome, Playstore, YouTube, Google Maps, etc. As per Google, Huawei products released on or before May 16th, 2019 will continue to get Google updates.
